Class Title: Beginning Charcoal Portraiture

Class supply list: 1 23"x25" drawing board, compressed charcoal sticks, HB and 4B charcoal pencils, 1 kneading eraser, 1 Tuff Stuff eraser, 1 X-acto knife or razor blade, 1 white chalk pastel pencil, 1 sheet of neutral grey 19"x25"charcoal paper, 4-5 cotton balls, 3-4 Q-tips, and several (3-5) 8.5"x11" black and white printouts of photographs that you would like to create a portrait from.

In this class, you will learn drawing exercises to familiarize you with the materials, techniques, and processes of drawing. You will learn how to combine additive and reductive drawing methods. You will exercise your observational skills to become more accurate in proportioning and placement of lines and shapes as well as improve your ability to create the illusion of volume and depth through manipulating value. At the end of the 4 sessions will have a finished charcoal portrait.
