Materials provided by student: Students are encouraged to bring their own tuned and sharpened hand tools, specifically: chisels, mallets and handplanes.  If you do not have tools, the school has some available to share.
Class Description:  For all you aspiring cabinetmakers and timber framers who have been asking for instruction focused on the fundamentals of joinery, this is the class for you.  Maddie Morgan will lead a comprehensive exploration of both Japanese and European systems of architectural joinery and will remove some of the mystery surrounding these complex methods for joining together two or more pieces of timber.  Using primarily traditional hand tools, students will learn to layout, cut, and fit a variety of sophisticated joints including dovetails, scarfs, and mortise and tenon.  For the more skilled and adventurous and time permitting, she will demonstrate several other, more demanding joints including a full-blind dovetail joint, a sunrise joint, a bird’s mouth joint, and a four-faced goose-neck splice joint.
