Class Description: Idea into Form: Clay is an amazing material. From a lump, we can create almost anything. This class is for those who would like to learn (or learn more) about the material and bring their ideas into the world. We will focus on sculpture and abstraction, moving from less to more abstract over 3 main projects. Projects include:Reliquary for an Experience where students will create a reliquary to venerate a cherished object, Alive Forms, in which we will play with the (idea of) the figure (human, animal, magical?) and Making Spaces, where a series or set of multiple objects, as well as the space they take up, will make up the composition.
For those accustomed to the functional and/or representational, Idea to Form will allow you to flex new muscles.
Basic hand building techniques (pinch, hard slab construction, coil building, building solid and hollowing) will be used and basics mid-range glazing and electric firing will be covered. Advanced students will be supported by the instructor in undertaking building and surface treatment exploration beyond the basic.
Students may also register for open studio hours (Wednesdays from 6-8 pm); registration for this option can be found in our class listings. Open studio hours provide a student-centered learning environment amongst individuals with a range of skill levels.
