Learn the basics of oil painting in the studio of a professional oil painter. The class will begin with an overview of the materials used in oil painting, including supports and grounds, mediums, the paints, brushes, and solvents. Emphasis will be placed on reducing exposure to toxic substances. Basic techniques of color, tone, shadows, blending, and creating form will be introduced. Students will be given time to practice each technique and ask questions. No experience required.
Brushes (1 of each):
Palette Knife for mixing colors
4-5 pre-primed small-medium sized canvas boards for practicing techniques. These are usually inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes.
The following materials are suggested but not required:
Oil Paints (M. Graham):
Empty jars (with lids) for cleaning brushes and holding solvents
Medium: M. Graham walnut oil
Solvent/Thinner: Odorless Mineral Spirits or Eco-House Citrus Thinner
